This thing, this green Rolex, they call it Submariner, right? My grandson, he’s always on about these fancy watches. Says it’s the original order, high imitation, whatever that means. Sounds like a load of hogwash to me, but he’s all excited. Says it’s just like the real deal, but way cheaper.

But he’s happy, and that’s what matters, I reckon. He showed it to me, all shiny and green. Looks pretty, I guess. Has that little date thing on it, too. He says it’s a cyclops. Sounds like some kind of monster to me. I wouldn’t know a cyclops from a ticktock on a clock. So this is the “cyclops” on his Rolex Submariner green, he says that is used to see the date. He tried to explain all the little details. Something about the bezel, the bracelet, the crown. My goodness, the crown. Sounds like it’s fit for a king. All these fancy words for a watch. He says it clicks just right, this bezel thing. And the bracelet, he says it’s solid. Whatever that means. I told him, my old watch has a leather strap, and it’s been working just fine for 30 years.

It’s a status symbol, whatever that is. Seems like a lot of fuss over something so small. But that’s what he says.

I just keep this secret with me and never tell anyone else. He is my grandson, and I will do anything for him. Even if I don’t understand his fancy high imitation Rolex. Or this original order thing.
I still don’t get it. A watch is a watch. But he’s happy. So I guess that’s all that matters. Maybe one day he’ll explain it to me again. Or maybe he’ll just buy me that apple pie. Either way, I’m good.
