After many months of waiting for a sequel to the ‘best written Visual Novel of all time’ Steins;Gate, the release date for Steins;Gate 0 has finally been announced: November 25th in Europe and the 29th in America.

About Steins;Gate 0

Spoilers for Steins;Gate Visual Novel and anime below

Instead of being a direct sequel, Steins;Gate 0 is a ‘midquel’, happening between the True End of the Visual Novel and after episode 23 of the anime. After protagonist Okabe Rinatrou finds out he is the one who kills Makise Kurisu, instead of rallying himself in a desperate effort to save her and the world from World War III, Okabe spirals into a deep depression. He abandons his Chuunibyou persona of Huouoin Kyoma and seeks mental help.

A year later, Okabe is a wreck, taking medication and hardly meeting with friends in order to get over the mental strain of Kurisu. His life is thrown back into time-travelling turmoil once again when he meets ‘Amadeus Kurisu’, a perfect digital clone of Makise Kurisu. The story of 0 is set to be much darker than the original Visual Novel. While the original dealt with how much you were willing to sacrifice for your friends, 0 makes you deal with the consequences whether you like it or not.

Like the original visual novel, you make choices in the game via Okabe’s phone, updated to a modern smartphone. Through this, he can access Amadeus Kurisu as a beta tester for the app. Replacing the emails of the past game is a messaging system called RINE, developed by series hacker Daru, and you can even send stickers with it.

Special Edition of Steins;Gate 0

Steins;Gate 0 comes with two limited editions, the Amadeus Edition and the Limited Edition

The normal Limited Edition box is rather bleak in its offerings. It comes in its own special packaging and includes a high-quality artbook of the game.

The Amadeus edition is where it’s at if you want more limited edition goodies. It includes:

  • Steins;Gate 0 Game

  • Collector’s Box

  • Official Steins;Gate 0 “Selected Works” Soundtrack

  • Steins;Gate 0 Art Book

  • Amadeus Kurisu Pin Badge

  • Steins;Gate 0 Fairy Upa

Hacking, once again, to the Gate

Steins;Gate is a story that can truly stand the test of time, a complex sci-fi story with a great cast of characters and an emotional meaning underneath it all. If you’re like me and only watched the anime, there is a redone episode 23β which connects the events of the original and 0 together.

I am hyped for the release of Steins;Gate 0, even if it’s not a direct sequel to the original series. An anime adaption has been announced, but with no release date yet.
