Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu, which was one of this years most well received anime, was announced for a second season soon after it’s conclusion, and now we have gotten a release date!
Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu season two, subtitled Sukeroku Anew arc (Sukeroku Futatabi-hen in Japanese) will begin airing in the Winter 2017 season of anime, which starts in January. This is similar to the first season, which aired in the Winter season of 2016 for 13 episodes, which the second season will probably run for as well.
The first season followed the backstory of the master rakugo performer Yakumo Yurakutei VIII, or Kikuhiko as he is known as for most of the past. The backstory focuses on his relationship with his friends Sukeroku and Miyokichi. The second season will follow the protagonist of the first episode of the first season, Yotaro, Yakumo’s apprentice and an ex-con. The story follows his Rakugo career in the Showa Genroku era of Japanese history.
The manga by Haruko Kumota, from which the series is based, ended just a couple of months ago in June, with the volume 10 coming out in September. So it can be assumed that this season will wrap up the rest of the story, something which I’m very excited to see as Rakugo’s story is one of the series many high points.
The first season was directed by Mamoru Hatakeyama with music by Kana Shibue at Studio Deen. The studio has been confirmed to be returning for the second season, but no confirmation about Hatakeyama or Shibue has been given.
Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu was one of my favorite shows from this year so far, so I’m very excited to watch more of it in January! Will Rakugo be one of the best shows of the year two years in a row? I sure hope so.
