The previously announced anime adaptation of Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid was a lot of new news released! A director, studio, release date and much┬ámore.

What is Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid about?

Miss Kobayashi's Dragon MaidMiss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid is a manga by Coolkyoushinja, that runs in Futabasha’s Monthly Action. The manga follows the titular Kobayashi, an office lady who ends up obtaining a dragon maid after a drunken night. The dragon Tohru, who wants to repay Kobayashi because she saved her life, becomes her maid. Thus begins the adventures of Miss Kobayashi and her dragon maid.

The anime will begin airing in January and is being produced by Kyoto Animation (Clannad, Sound Euphonium). The series will be directed by Yasuhiro Takemoto (Hyouka, High Speed!). The show will be full length episodes, unlike previous adaptations of Coolkyoushinja works. As for other staff…

The staff of Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid

  • Yasuhiro Takemoto (Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya) on direction
  • Yuka Yamada (Umi Monogatari) on series composition
  • Miku Kadowaki (Amagi Brilliant Park) on character design
  • Masumi Itou (Flip Flappers) doing the soundtrack
  • fhana (Haruchika) will perform the opening theme
  • The main cast will perform the ending theme

The official website also added the voice actors for the prominent characters. They go as follows.

  • Mutsumi Tamura (SoreMachi‘s Takeru) as Kobayashi
  • Yuuki Kuwahara (Himegoto‘s Hime) as Tohru
  • Maria Naganawa (Anitore‘s Akiko) as Kanna
  • Yuuki Takada (New Game‘s Aoba) as Elma
  • Minami Takahashi (Food Wars‘ Megumi) as Lucoa

Kobayashi key visual

The key visual and character design sheet for Tohru were also unveiled, giving us a peek at the shows art style. While different then the manga’s it’s still recognizable, as Tohru. I can’t say I ever expected to see Cool kyou shinja’s work with the Kyoto Animation style though! I’m not quite sure why the producers decided to go with this route, but never the less I’m excited to see how this goes. Kyoto Animation is my favorite studio, and Takemoto is a good (Editors Note: FREAKING AMAZING) director from what I’ve seen.

Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid

Either way we only have to wait a couple of short months until the show airs, so we’ll soon find out if this works or not!

  1. Yasuhiro Takemoto is my favorite KyoAni series director. He joined Kyoto Animation as an animator back in 1996, and was promoted to animation director in 1997, working in that position on some works outsourced to KyoAni such as “Hyper Police”. In 2000, he was promoted again to storyboarder and episode director. Then in 2003, he directed the first series that KyoAni produced on its own; Full Metal Panic: Fumoffu. Since then, he was the series director on Full Metal Panic: The Second Raid, Lucky Star (episodes 5 through 24), Hyouka, and Amagi Brilliant Park. Takemoto was also the co-director on the Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya film (together with Tatsuya Ishihara), and most recently, Takemoto directed last year’s “Free High Speed Starting Days” film solo.
