Godzilla is getting his very first animated film and there’s already quite the crew attached to make this legendary king of monsters come to life.
A 3DCG anime film of TOHO‘s iconic Godzilla franchise has been green-lit for release in 2017. Kobun Shizuno and Hiroyuki Seshita are co-directing the film at Polygon Pictures while Gen Urobuchi of Nitroplus is credited with the story concept and screenplay.
The film also opened a website featuring its first key visual.
The website also contains personal comments from Shizuno, Seshita and Urobuchi discussing their thoughts on the project.
Kobun Shizuno’s comment:
We’re aiming to create entertainment on a scale that can only be done in anime, that people who love Godzilla or even people who don’t know anything about it can appreciate. Please look forward to it.
Heres Hiroyuki Seshita’s comment:
Alongside Mr. Urobuchi and Mr. Kobun, creators who have extremely unique and worldly talents, we’re looking to make a human drama along with a massive world.
And finally, Gen Urobuchi’s comment:
To be allowed to work on a Godzilla title is the highest honor anyone could give a creator born in Japan, I think. I would like to give my thanks to all the people who have supported me thus far, as well as work in my full power to meet their expectations.
More Godzilla already?
The monster’s newest film, Shin Godzilla (or Resurgence) opened in Japan on July 29, 2016. It’s the first Japanese movie in over 10 years since 2004’s Godzilla Final Wars. Resurgence also has some anime ties in its production with Gainax co-founders Hideaki Anno (creator of Neon Genesis Evangelion) and Shinji Higuchi, being the co-directors of the project.
